Blake Treinen, a key reliever for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has reportedly signed a two-year, $22 million contract to stay with the team. Ken Rosenthal, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, and Jeff Passan of ESPN first reported the deal.
Treinen has been a vital part of the Dodgers’ bullpen since joining in 2020. Known for his effectiveness in high-pressure situations, Treinen was instrumental during the team’s October championship run. He led the pitching staff in strikeouts and was the team’s top high-leverage reliever.
This marks Treinen’s fourth contract with the Dodgers and the third as a free agent. After being non-tendered by the Oakland Athletics, he merged the team on a one-year deal for the 2020 season. Following that season, Treinen signed a two-year, $17.5 million contract. While recovering from a shoulder injury in 2022, he agreed to an $8 million deal for 2023, which included a conditional $1 million option for 2024.
After recovering from a rib cage injury during spring training, Treinen returned to form in 2024, delivering a strong performance. He posted a 1.93 ERA and 2.38 expected ERA in 50 regular-season games, striking out 56 batters and allowing only 11 walks in 46⅔ innings.
Treinen’s postseason contributions were equally impressive, with a 2.19 ERA in nine appearances. He led all Dodgers pitchers with 18 strikeouts across 12⅓ innings and played a critical role in several key moments, including three saves and two wins in relief. In Match 5 of the World Series, Treinen pitched 2⅓ scoreless innings, striking out three to guide the Dodgers to the eighth inning.
Since joining the Dodgers, Treinen has consistently ranked among the best relievers in Major League Baseball. From 2020 to 2024, he recorded a 2.29 ERA, ranking fourth among relievers, with a 3.00 FIP and a strikeout-minus-walk rate of 20.9%.
In an interview on Foul Territory on December 5, Treinen expressed his desire to stay with the Dodgers, saying, “I will never speak poorly of the Dodgers. I would welcome any deal to bring me back there with open arms.”
Treinen, who will turn 37 in June, has had an impressive MLB career, with a 2.78 ERA, 3.26 FIP, and 560 strikeouts in 549⅔ innings. He has accumulated 80 saves while playing for the Washington Nationals, Oakland Athletics, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers have had a productive start to the winter meetings, reportedly agreeing to deals with Treinen and outfielder Michael Conforto.
