Paris, July 29, 2024 – David Popovici made history on a dazzling night at the Paris 2024 Olympics, becoming the first Romanian male swimmer to clinch an Olympic gold medal. The 19-year-old sensation secured victory in the men’s 200m freestyle, showcasing his exceptional talent and relentless pursuit of perfection.

In a thrilling race at the Paris La Defense Arena, Popovici clocked a time of 1:44.72, narrowly edging out Great Britain’s Matthew Richards by just 0.02 seconds. The race was a nail-biter, with Germany’s Lukas Maertens and USA’s Luke Hobson also vying for the top spot. Popovici’s victory was met with jubilation from Romanian fans in the stands, marking a momentous achievement for his country.

Known for his calm demeanor and philosophical outlook, Popovici reflected on the race, emphasizing the importance of striving for perfection. “No one is a perfect swimmer. Neither am I,” he said. “Not even Michael Phelps is perfect. He is the most decorated and objectively best, but everyone is far from perfect. The best you can do is try and chase perfection.”

Popovici’s approach to the sport sets him apart. “He does not get in the zone. He lives in the zone,” said Bruno Fratus of Brazil, a former rival in the 100m freestyle. This unique mindset was evident in Popovici’s assessment of his race. “It was a pure dogfight,” he remarked. “We all fought until the last stroke with every atom in our bodies.”

Despite his victory, Popovici remained critical of his performance. “I should have gone a whole second and a half faster,” he reflected. “But it’s just how it turned out, and maybe it’s for the better. Maybe I would have died in the last 50. Who knows? Or maybe I would have gone to 1:43. Who knows? We will never know.”

Popovici’s journey to gold was challenging. He returned stronger after a medal-less 2023 season, demonstrating resilience and determination. “He’s a fantastic racer,” said silver medallist Richards. “He’s trying different things, learning from them all. He’s not always winning, but it’s about learning and moving forward.”

Popovici’s victory is a testament to the hard work and sacrifices made by athletes behind the scenes. “The cameras, the public only sees the glory, the shiny medals, the strong finishes,” he noted. “But we go training whenever we have a cold or two or three hours of sleep because we couldn’t sleep being stressed about the Olympics. There are so many sacrifices that go unnoticed.”

For Romania, Popovici’s triumph is a historic moment and an inspiration for future generations. As he celebrated his win, Popovici acknowledged the support of his country, friends, and family. “It’s a historic event,” he said. “I did it for the child in me that always wanted to do this. I did it for my friends and my family, for the close team that I have next to me, and I also did it for the country. And I’m very grateful for that. It’s beautiful.”
