Anaheim, Nov 18 – Drew Helleson’s opportunity with the Anaheim Ducks could be a make-or-break moment in his NHL career as the defenseman fills a crucial spot in the lineup following injuries to Cam Fowler and Urho Vaakanainen. Helleson can prove himself as a regular in the Ducks’ defence corps with both players sidelined.
The 23-year-old Helleson made his season debut for the Ducks recently, marking his first NHL game in over a year and a half. His return to the big league had been delayed due to a series of setbacks, including a separated shoulder and wrist injury that disrupted his 2023-24 campaign. After playing just three games in the 2022-23 season, Helleson spent most of last season in the AHL, where he worked on his recovery and development.
Helleson reflected on his return to the NHL after his game, expressing how pleased he was with his performance. “Pretty good,” he said with a smile. Despite his extended time away from the NHL, Helleson collected his first multi-point game as a professional, showing signs of the promise that once made him a vital part of the Ducks’ plans.
His debut performance was far from perfect, as he admitted to some initial struggles during the first period. “Shaky first period,” Helleson said, adding that he was able to settle down and improve as the game went on. Head coach Greg Cronin noted that Helleson’s nervous energy in the first period resulted in overly aggressive play in the defensive zone. Still, adjustments were made during the break, and he found his rhythm in the second and third periods.
Teaming up with fellow Boston College alumni Brian Dumoulin, Helleson helped contribute to the Ducks’ victory, including an assist on Cutter Gauthier’s first NHL goal. “It was bound to happen with a guy like Cutter,” Helleson said. “He’s so skilled and has a great shot, so you knew it was coming.” The assist marked a highlight in Helleson’s return and showed the benefit of his strong chemistry with his teammates.
Dumoulin, who has positively influenced Helleson, offered simple but invaluable advice to the young defenseman: “Just play your game. Just play simple, play hard, and things will come.” The veteran defenseman emphasized the importance of staying calm and playing instinctively, especially in high-pressure situations.
Despite the solid performance in his debut, Helleson faces stiff competition and the pressure to maintain a regular spot in the lineup. The Ducks’ defence is thin, with both Fowler and Vaakanainen out due to injuries. Fowler is expected to be sidelined for 2-4 weeks, and Vaakanainen’s injury is undisclosed, leaving an opening for Helleson to prove himself over an extended period. His time in the lineup could be pivotal for his career and the team’s defensive depth moving forward.
With the Ducks’ ability to pair left-right defensemen becoming increasingly important, Helleson’s versatility has been a critical asset. Head coach Cronin acknowledged the benefit of having a right-handed shot on the blue line, which helps with quicker puck distribution, particularly in the neutral zone. Helleson was also praised for keeping pucks in the offensive zone, notably hitting the post during a critical moment late in the game.
While Helleson’s future with the Ducks remains uncertain, his call-up presents a significant opportunity. If he can continue to develop and prove his worth, the 23-year-old defenseman could earn a more permanent role in Anaheim’s lineup as the team pushes forward in the 2024 season.
