The EuroLeague is once again taking strides to enhance the game of basketball, implementing key rule changes for the upcoming 2024-25 season. These updates aim to align the EuroLeague Basketball rulebook with FIBA regulations while ensuring a fair and clear experience for both players and fans.
Reviewable Backcourt Violations
One of the most significant changes this season is the addition of backcourt violations to the Instant Replay System (IRS). This means that if referees call a backcourt violation on the team in possession, the call can now be reviewed in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter and during overtime. Additionally, coaches have the ability to challenge this call at any point during the game, adding a layer of strategy and oversight to critical moments.
Jump Ball Violations Redefined
Another noteworthy update pertains to jump ball violations. Under the new rules, a violation that occurs during a jump ball will no longer result in a throw-in. Instead, the player inbounding the ball will do so while straddling the center line. The team will have a full 24 seconds on the shot clock in such cases. The ball will be inbounded in the backcourt with 24 seconds remaining on the shot clock if the infraction occurs in the opposing team’s frontcourt. Conversely, if the violation occurs in the backcourt, the ball will be inbounded in the frontcourt with a reset to 14 seconds.
Clarifications on Defensive Semi-Circle
The EuroLeague has also made important clarifications regarding block and charge calls related to the defensive semi-circle (DSC). A defensive player will now be deemed outside the DSC if their foot is elevated above the DSC line, shifting the interpretation of these critical calls. This change aims to reduce confusion and ensure more accurate officiating.
As the EuroLeague prepares for the new season, these rule updates reflect its commitment to improving the game for all participants. By incorporating technology like the Instant Replay System and aligning with international standards, the EuroLeague is setting a progressive tone for the future of basketball. Fans can look forward to a more dynamic and transparent game experience as these changes come into effect.
