Evan Fournier, the former New York Knicks sharpshooter and record holder, is reportedly weighing a return to European basketball for the 2024-25 season. According to Michalis Stefanou of Eurohoops, Fournier is “Considering the possibility with seriousness” of moving back to Europe after remaining a free agent since the Detroit Pistons declined his $19 million option at the end of last season.

Fournier, who was a standout for the Knicks, set a single-season record for three-pointers with 241 during his debut season. However, this record was surpassed by Donte DiVincenzo, who made 283 threes in the 2023-24 season. Fournier’s tenure with the Knicks was cut short after he was traded to Detroit in a deal that brought Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks to New York.

Despite his significant impact in New York, Fournier’s time with the Pistons was less notable. He averaged only 7.2 points per game on 37 per cent shooting, including a 27 per cent mark from beyond the arc, over 29 games.

Fournier, 31, had expressed a desire to continue his NBA career, but there have been no recent updates on his status since his stint with the Pistons ended. European clubs, particularly in France, Italy, and Spain, have shown interest in the veteran guard.

Fournier’s performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he was the third-leading scorer for France with 9.8 points per game and contributed significantly in the quarterfinals, has demonstrated his continued value on the court. As the season methods, it will be interesting to see if Fournier’s next chapter will be back in Europe or if he will continue to seek opportunities in the NBA.
