Paris, France – In a decisive move to enhance the atmosphere at Roland Garros, the French Open has banned alcohol consumption in the stands. This change, announced by tournament director Amelie Mauresmo, comes in response to increasing concerns over fan behaviour, highlighted by a recent incident involving Belgian player David Goffin.
During his match against France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Goffin was subjected to a shocking act of disrespect when a spectator spat chewing gum at him. This incident and defending women’s champion Iga Swiatek’s plea for quieter and more respectful fans have spurred the tournament officials to take immediate action.
A Call for Respect and Decorum
“First of all, we are happy people who are enthusiastic about watching tennis and being part of the matches, showing feelings and emotions,” Mauresmo stated. “But there are steps which shouldn’t go further. A few things have needed to be put in place.”
In her announcement, Mauresmo emphasized that while fans’ enthusiasm and emotional engagement are welcome, maintaining a respectful environment is paramount. Consequently, alcohol will no longer be permitted in the stands. However, it will still be available on the concourses and around the tournament grounds.
Stricter Enforcement and Increased Security
Beyond the alcohol ban, Mauresmo outlined additional measures to improve spectator conduct. Chair umpires will demand stricter respect for the players and the game itself. Enhanced security measures will be implemented to identify and warn offenders, ensuring they adjust their behaviour promptly.
“Overstepping these two things is not something we will tolerate,” Mauresmo asserted. “If people want to show emotion, that’s great. Let’s see how it happens. I’m an optimist, and I think people will react well. If not, we will take more measures.”
Adapting to Weather Challenges
In addition to addressing fan behaviour, the French Open adapts to unpredictable weather conditions. The start of play at Roland Garros has been brought forward to 10 am [09:00 BST] on Friday, a necessary adjustment following a week of significant rain delays. By Thursday morning, only nine players had advanced to the third round, far behind the intended schedule.
More rain is forecast for Thursday, making it unlikely that all 128 singles second-round matches will be completed as planned. The tournament officials are working diligently to manage the schedule and ensure that the competition progresses smoothly despite these challenges.
