Detroit, November 18 – Veteran goaltender Jack Campbell has returned to the NHL but not to the Detroit Red Wings, marking another twist in a tumultuous career in recent years. Campbell, who entered the NHLPA Players Assistance Program on October 4, has been cleared to return to action, though his anticipated debut with the Red Wings will face further delays.
Campbell, 32, has played for multiple teams during his NHL career, including the Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Edmonton Oilers. Despite signing a new contract with the Red Wings on July 1, the netminder has yet to appear in a game for Detroit. With his return, Campbell will likely initially report to the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit’s AHL affiliate, unless claimed by another team.
Under league rules, players in the NHLPA assistance program cannot be placed on waivers, but Campbell’s recent waiver placement indicates he has been cleared to resume professional play. At the time of writing, the Red Wings have not released an official statement regarding Campbell’s next steps.
Campbell’s career trajectory has been challenging. After signing with the Edmonton Oilers ahead of the 2022-23 season, expectations were high for him to assume the starting goaltender role. However, inconsistent performances led to Stuart Skinner overtaking him as the Oilers’ primary netminder. Skinner’s impressive play earned him a Calder Trophy finalist nomination, further cementing his position as Edmonton’s top choice in goal.
The following season, he proved even more difficult for Campbell. In just five NHL appearances, he posted a disappointing 1-4-0 record, a 4.50 goals-against average (GAA) and a .873 save percentage (SV%). These struggles led to his reassignment to the Bakersfield Condors, Edmonton’s AHL affiliate, where his performance remained inconsistent.
Now cleared to play, Campbell’s future remains uncertain. While the Red Wings retain his rights, his immediate path forward may depend on whether another NHL team opts to claim him off waivers. He is expected to join the Griffins to rebuild his form and confidence if unclaimed.
For the Red Wings, the situation underscores the challenges of managing goaltender depth amid fluctuating performances and external factors. Fans eager to see Campbell in Detroit’s lineup must wait longer as the team continues to assess its goaltending options for the current season.
