Early Life

Joel Embiid was born on March 16, 1994, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. As a kid, he played soccer and volleyball, and he only started playing basketball at the age of 15. Luc Mbah a Moute discovered him at a basketball camp in his hometown. To chase his dream of becoming a professional basketball player, Joel moved to Montverde Academy in Florida. Because he didn’t get much playing time there, he switched to The Rock School, where he completed high school. He then played college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks, earning many awards in his conference before entering the 2014 NBA Draft.

NBA Journey

The Philadelphia 76ers picked Joel third in the 2014 NBA Draft. He missed the first two seasons due to foot surgeries. Joel debuted in the 2016-2017 season, playing 31 games and making a big impact, earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team. In his second season, he became an NBA All-Star and one of the top big men, despite injuries limiting his play. Joel’s best season was 2020-2021, finishing second in the MVP race but missing 21 games. The season ended with a loss to the Atlanta Hawks in the playoffs.
