The Miami Marlins are set to hire Daniel Moskos as their new pitching coach, marking his first role as a lead pitching coach. The news was first reported by Kyle Sielaff and Stephen Strom of the team’s radio network.
Moskos, 38, was selected fourth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2007 MLB Draft. Four years later, he made his major league debut, appearing in 31 relief games with the Pirates. However, his time in the big leagues was brief, and he spent most of his career in the minors and Mexico before transitioning into coaching. After playing until 2018, Moskos joined the New York Yankees’ system for a couple of seasons before becoming an assistant pitching coach with the Chicago Cubs during the 2021-22 offseason.
Over the past three seasons, Moskos has been part of the Cubs’ coaching staff, working under managers David Ross and Craig Counsell. Tommy Hottovy had served as the Cubs’ pitching coach for the last six seasons.
Moskos’ hiring is part of the Marlins’ broader efforts to reshape their coaching staff under first-year manager Clayton McCullough. The Marlins have also reportedly named Carson Vitale, the Seattle Mariners’ field coordinator, as their bench coach and appointed Pedro Guerrero, formerly an assistant hitting coach with the San Francisco Giants, as their new hitting instructor.
