The San Francisco Giants secured their future at third base, signing All-Star Matt Chapman to a six-year, $151 million contract extension on Wednesday night. The deal, which includes a full no-trade clause and no opt-outs, keeps Matt Chapman in the Bay Area through 2030, ensuring that the defensive standout remains the cornerstone of the Giants’ infield.

According to sources close to the negotiations, Chapman will earn $25 million annually, with a $1 million buyout included in the package. This extension comes after Chapman signed a three-year, $54 million deal in March, which included two option years.

Chapman’s 2024 Campaign

The 31-year-old has been the Giants’ most consistent and versatile player this season, leading the team in multiple offensive categories, including 22 home runs, 69 RBIs, 90 runs, 33 doubles, and 126 hits. He also continues to flash his elite glove, recording 13 defensive runs saved, the highest among third basemen in the league.

Chapman’s offensive production and Gold Glove-caliber defense put him in rare company, as he became just the second third baseman in Giants’ franchise history to notch at least 30 doubles, 20 homers, and 10 stolen bases in a single season, a feat not achieved since Freddie Lindstrom in 1930.

Mutual Commitment

Although the Giants’ playoff hopes remain slim with a 68-72 record, Matt Chapman’s importance to the team extends far beyond this season. Both Chapman and the Giants made it clear that their partnership is built to last, with the third baseman expressing his desire to finish his career in San Francisco.

By locking down Chapman, the Giants made a strong statement about their future. With free agent Alex Bregman expected to be the top third baseman on the market this winter, San Francisco has ensured their star remains in-house.
