Musiala’s Header Lifts Bayern Munich to Key Win Over Benfica

Jamal Musiala heads in the winning goal for Bayern Munich against Benfica in the Champions League.

Bayern Munich ended their two-game Champions League losing streak with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Benfica at the Allianz Arena. Jamal Musiala scored the match’s only goal in the 67th minute, expertly heading in a cross from Harry Kane to secure the three points for the German champions.

Bayern’s front line, including Kane and Serge Gnabry, created early pressure, forcing strong saves from Benfica’s keeper, Anatoliy Trubin. The Portuguese side set up defensively, limiting Bayern’s chances in the first half, but struggled to contain Bayern’s attacking momentum after the break.

The second-half substitute, Leroy Sane, also threatened Benfica’s defence by testing Trubin with two powerful attempts. But Musiala, in fine form, ultimately broke the deadlock. Known for his agility and creativity, the young midfielder’s header marked his fifth goal in four games and his third headed goal in recent weeks—a notable feat for a player previously not known for scoring with his head.

Bayern’s victory was much-needed after losses to Aston Villa and Barcelona had put them under pressure in the League Phase. Now back in the top 24, they sit 17th, tied on points with Benfica, who occupy the 19th spot.

Currently leading the Bundesliga by three points, Bayern Munich has won four consecutive matches, scoring 16 goals and conceding none. Musiala’s form has been instrumental in this resurgence, and his energy and skill continue to make him a fan favourite. The 21-year-old was met with a standing ovation as he left the pitch late in the match, replaced by Thomas Muller.

Bayern’s focus now is consolidating its Champions League position as it advances in domestic and European competitions under manager Vincent Kompany.
