Neymar Returns A Historic Homecoming for Brazil’s Star

Neymar returns to Santos, greeted by cheering fans.

Neymar has agreed to return to his former club, Santos, in Brazil. He revealed his excitement about the move by stating, “It feels like I’m going back in time.” The 32-year-old forward, Brazil’s all-time top goalscorer, is set to sign a short-term agreement with the club where he began his illustrious career.

The move comes after Neymar mutually agreed to terminate his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. This would end a brief and injury-plagued spell in which he made just seven appearances following his £77.6m transfer to the club in August 2023.

In a social media videotape published on Thursday, Neymar expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I just can’t hold it in until tomorrow—I’ll sign the contract at Santos. I’ve been wishing this moment would come true for a long time. It’s been over 12 years since I left, but it seems it was yesterday. My feelings for the club and fans have never changed.”

Despite Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire interest, Neymar opted to return to Santos over a move to the United States.

Neymar remains the world’s most expensive footballer, a title he earned following his £200m transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. He initially made his name at Santos, scoring 136 goals in 225 games, before repositioning to Barcelona in 2013. During his four seasons with the Catalan club, Neymar won two La Liga titles, a Champions League, and a Club World Cup.

In 2017, he made his world-record move to PSG, where he won five French league titles. He also surpassed Pele to become Brazil’s all-time leading male goalscorer with 78 goals, although he has not featured for his country since suffering a knee injury in 2023.
