The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has unveiled its playing XI for the first Test match against Bangladesh, which will commence on August 21 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. This two-match Test series marks the beginning of Pakistan’s campaign in the ICC World Test Championship and serves as the first assignment for newly appointed Test coach Jason Gillespie.
As expected, Pakistan’s batting lineup will see star player Babar Azam taking on the critical role of batting at number four. Babar Azam, Known for his consistency and ability to anchor the innings, is set to be a cornerstone of Pakistan’s batting performance.
Abdullah Shafique and the young sensation Saim Ayub will shoulder the opening responsibilities. This combination is expected to bring a fresh and dynamic approach at the top of the order. Shan Masood, who has been handed the captaincy, will lead from the front in the middle order, further strengthening the team’s batting lineup alongside Babar.
Pace Battery and Spin Options
Pakistan’s fast-bowling attack is bolstered by including Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, Khurram Shahzad, and Mohammad Ali. This formidable pace quartet is expected to exploit the conditions in Rawalpindi, which is known for assisting fast bowlers, especially in the early part of the match.
On the spin front, Saud Shakeel, who also serves as vice-captain, and Salman Ali Agha will be the primary options. Their role will be crucial, particularly on the traditionally slower pitches expected in the later stages of the Test match.
Aamir Jamal’s Fitness Setback
A notable exclusion from the squad is fast bowler Aamir Jamal, who has been released due to ongoing fitness issues. Jamal, who had been struggling with a back injury sustained during his stint in County cricket earlier this year, was initially included in the squad for the World Test Championship series, pending a fitness clearance. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old has not fully recovered, leading to his withdrawal from the team and rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.
With the first Test set to begin on August 21 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan is keen to start their Test campaign on a strong note. The second and final Test of the series is scheduled to take place from August 30 to September 3 at the iconic National Stadium in Karachi.
