Rizwan, Shakeel Shine as PAK Dominates BAN on Day 2

The second day of the first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh at Rawalpindi belonged entirely to the hosts, thanks to the outstanding performances of Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel. Resuming the day on 158/4, Pakistan built on their solid start, with Rizwan and Shakeel taking center stage. The pair forged a remarkable 240-run partnership for the fifth wicket, which laid the foundation for Pakistan’s massive first-innings total of 448/6 before they declared.

The player of the day was none other than Mohammad Rizwan, who amassed his greatest Test cricket score of 171 without losing. His innings were a blend of patience and aggression, featuring 11 boundaries and three sixes. Saud Shakeel, on the other hand, provided excellent support, compiling a well-crafted 141. The partnership between these two not only frustrated the Bangladeshi bowlers but also put Pakistan in a commanding position in the match. The partnership is now among the highest for the fifth wicket for Pakistan in Test cricket.

Bangladesh’s bowlers, who had shown promise on Day 1, struggled to make an impact on the second day. Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam, who took wickets on the first day, failed to add to their tally, while Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz managed to pick up a wicket each. Pakistan’s decision to declare their innings was a strategic move, likely influenced by the possibility of rain affecting the match in the later stages.

In response, Bangladesh’s openers, Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan, managed to survive the remaining overs of the day without losing their wickets, reaching 27/0 at the stumps. The pair showed resilience against the pace and swing of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, who tested them with some hostile deliveries. As the match progresses, Bangladesh will need to put up a strong batting performance to avoid falling further behind in this crucial Test match.
