PR Sreejesh Announces Retirement After Paris 2024 Olympics

Indian Hockey Legend to Conclude Illustrious Career with Fourth Olympic Appearance

Indian hockey stalwart PR Sreejesh has announced that the Paris 2024 Olympics will be his final international outing. It marks the end of an 18-year career that has left an indelible mark on the sport. The 36-year-old goalkeeper, known for exceptional skills and leadership, will retire after competing in his fourth Olympic Games.

Sreejesh’s journey with the Indian national hockey team began in 2006. Over nearly two decades, he has played 328 matches, becoming a cornerstone of the team. His heroics at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where India clinched a historic bronze medal, remain a highlight of his illustrious career.

“As I stand on the threshold of my final chapter in international hockey, my heart swells with gratitude and reflection,” Sreejesh said. “This journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I am forever grateful for the love and support from my family, teammates, coaches, and fans.”

He fondly recalled his humble beginnings: “I still remember my father selling our cow to buy my first kit. His sacrifice ignited a fire, pushing me to strive harder and dream bigger.”

Beyond the Tokyo 2020 triumph, Sreejesh has been instrumental in India’s success at various international tournaments. He has won three Asian Games medals, including golds in Incheon 2014 and Hangzhou 2022. His efforts helped India secure a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Sreejesh earned two Commonwealth Games silver medals and was crucial for India’s tIndia’sace finish at the FIH Hockey Pro League 2021-22. His accolades include the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021 and the World Games Athlete of the Year in 2021. He was named FIH Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021 and 2022.

Looking ahead to Paris, Sreejesh said, “As I prepare for my last dance in Paris, I look back with immense pride and forward with hope. This journey has been outstanding, and I am forever grateful for the love and support… Thank you for believing in me.”

His teammates, who have stood by him through the highs and lows, are determined to give their best in Paris. “We all want to give our absolute best here in Paris, and certainly, the desire is to change the color of our medal,” Sreejes” added.

As PR Sreejesh bids farewell to international hockey, he leaves a legacy of dedication, resilience, and excellence. His contributions to Indian hockey will be remembered and celebrated for generations.
