Scott McTominay has opened up about his decision to leave Manchester United this summer, describing it as a problematic yet necessary move to prioritize his career ambitions. The 27-year-old midfielder joined Napoli in August and quickly became a standout performer for Antonio Conte’s side, contributing four goals and two assists in 15 appearances as the team sits second in Serie A. Speaking to BBC Scotland, McTominay explained his reasoning, emphasizing his need to “look out for number one” and embrace the opportunity presented by Napoli.
Describing the move as both significant and straightforward, McTominay highlighted the passion of Napoli’s fans, the squad’s quality, and the coaching staff’s appeal. He expressed no regrets, stating, “As soon as I put my mind to something, I want to do it, that’s it. There’s no holding me back.” McTominay’s arrival at Napoli also reunited him with Scotland teammate Billy Gilmour, which he described as a welcome bonus, adding that the two have supported each other in adapting to life at the Italian club.

The decision to sell McTominay has left many Manchester United fans and pundits puzzled, particularly as then-manager Erik Ten Hag had publicly expressed a desire to retain the midfielder. However, Financial Fair Play (FFP) considerations played a crucial role in the transfer, with the sale of homegrown players providing vital financial relief. Despite this, McTominay clarified that his decision was driven by his desire to seize the opportunity at Napoli rather than the club’s financial constraints.
Reflecting on his departure from Manchester United, where he spent 22 years after joining the academy at age five, McTominay admitted it was emotional to say goodbye. He shared that his conversation with Ten Hag was amicable, with both parties acknowledging the realities of the situation. “It was my career, and I had to push myself on,” McTominay explained. “I love that football club to bits, but I have moved on now and thoroughly enjoy myself here.”
McTominay’s performances for Napoli have endeared him to the club’s passionate fanbase, solidifying his status as a key figure in Conte’s plans. The midfielder’s decision to prioritize his career goals has already begun to pay off as he thrives in a new chapter of his footballing journey.
