Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers is on the brink of making baseball history. The two-way phenom is closing in on the elusive 50-50 milestone—50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season—something no player in MLB history has achieved.
Despite being sidelined from pitching due to injury, Ohtani continues to dominate at the plate. As of Wednesday’s victory over the Chicago Cubs, Ohtani has 47 home runs and 48 stolen bases. With just 16 games left in the Dodgers’ regular-season schedule, he needs only three home runs and two stolen bases to etch his name into the record books.
When Could Ohtani Hit 50-50?
The Dodgers are set for a four-game series in Atlanta against the Braves (Sept. 13-16) followed by three games against the Miami Marlins (Sept. 17-19). They’ll return to Los Angeles for a three-game home series against the Colorado Rockies (Sept. 20-22), during which fans will have a chance to grab a Shohei Ohtani shirt on Sept. 21. If Ohtani keeps his current pace, he could hit the 50-50 mark within the next week.
Ohtani’s 50-50 Betting Odds
Betting odds suggest that Ohtani is heavily favored to reach the 50-50 milestone. As of Sept. 8 on FanDuel, the odds are:
- Yes: -430
- No: +300
Ohtani’s Entry Into the 40-40 Club
Ohtani joined the exclusive 40-40 club on Aug. 23 after reaching his 40th stolen base during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He capped the night with a walk-off grand slam, bringing his home run tally to 40 and securing his place in baseball history as the sixth and fastest player to achieve this feat.
Could Ohtani Pitch in the 2024 Playoffs?
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts recently hinted at the possibility of Ohtani returning to the mound during the 2024 postseason. After undergoing elbow-reconstruction surgery in September 2023, Ohtani has only worked as a hitter in 2024. However, Roberts left the door slightly ajar for a pitching comeback, saying, “If things line up, and the game, his body, everything is telling us that it makes sense… it would be storybook.”
MLB’s 40-40 Club
Only five other players have ever reached the 40-40 mark:
- Jose Canseco (1988): 42 HR, 40 SB
- Barry Bonds (1996): 42 HR, 40 SB
- Alex Rodriguez (1998): 42 HR, 45 SB
- Alfonso Soriano (2006): 46 HR, 41 SB
- Ronald Acuña Jr. (2023): 41 HR, 73 SB
If Ohtani hits 50-50, he’ll elevate the accomplishment to a level never seen before.
Stay tuned as Ohtani races against the clock and continues to make history in what has already been an unforgettable season for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
