Jannik Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev in a tense four-set match at the US Open to earn his first-ever spot in the semi-finals of his career. The world number one triumphed with a scoreline of 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. Sinner’s victory sets up a semi-final clash against Britain’s 25th-ranked Jack Draper.
Sinner, who triumphed at the Australian Open, is aiming to win a second major title. He faced Medvedev, the 2021 champion and two-time runner-up. The match showcased a dynamic performance from Sinner, who adjusted his strategy effectively throughout.
The opening set saw Sinner dominate, breaking Medvedev twice while the Russian racked up 15 unforced errors compared to Sinner’s six. Medvedev, however, responded strongly in the second set, leveling the match with a double break.
Sinner seized control of the third set in just thirty minutes. The fourth set was a closely contested, but Sinner’s resilience paid off. He saved two crucial break points in the sixth game and capitalized on his opportunity to break Medvedev’s serve for a 4-3 lead, ultimately sealing the match.
Medvedev, who had to save 10 of 15 break points, struggled with unforced errors throughout the match, which hindered his bid for a 10th Grand Slam semi-final appearance.
Sinner will now face Draper, who has impressed throughout the tournament by reaching the semi-finals without dropping a set. The Italian anticipated the upcoming match, highlighting his friendship with Draper off the court.
