Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs’ rising star, has expressed a newfound sense of freedom in his second NBA season, crediting the team for embracing his unique style of play. Known for his versatility and creative approach to the game, Wembanyama revealed that his current level of autonomy on the court has been pivotal for his growth as a player.
“That everyday fight you talk about is something I’ve been through, of course, growing up a lot,” Victor Wembanyama shared. “But now, I’m experiencing levels of freedom that I’ve never had the chance before. And for me, it’s also the clearest path into how to get better and how to get to the top level.”
Wembanyama emphasized that the freedom to explore his creativity has been instrumental in helping him contribute effectively to his team. The Spurs have resisted constraints on his playstyle, aligning with Wembanyama’s vision of developing into a well-rounded and impactful player. “It makes sense that we see creativity on the court because I think it’s best for me to help my team. They’re not putting me in a box, and I’m not going to, either,” he added.
The numbers reflect his unconventional approach. Among players who have logged 350 or more shots this season, Wembanyama ranks 13th in the percentage of jump shots taken (63.4%), placing him in a category dominated by guards and wings. A source within the Spurs organization compared Wembanyama’s style to that of Kevin Durant rather than Hakeem Olajuwon, underscoring his preference for perimeter shooting and fluid movements.
Interim head coach Mitch Johnson acknowledged the criticisms surrounding Wembanyama’s inclination to shoot from beyond the arc but defended the player’s instincts and long-term potential. “For someone that is as in tune with who he wants to be and who he has the potential to be as Victor, it’s our job to respect that and kind of partner with him in growing who that is,” Johnson explained. He added that while there’s room for refinement in understanding timing and execution, Wembanyama has shown significant improvement with experience.
