The 27 Year old player was included in Southgate’s first 33 man squad but has been told he will be one of the seven players dropped when the final 26-man team for the tournament in Germany is announced on Saturday.
Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones is also not selected, and both players have left the England camp before the team’s last warm-up match against Iceland at Wembley on Friday.
“I trained well and worked hard all week, but if I’m honest, my form for Spurs after coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t up to my usual standards, which gave Gareth a tough choice,” said Maddison.
“I still thought I would make the 26-man squad because I bring something different and have been a key player in the qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany. However, the manager made his decision, and I respect that. I’ll be back, I have no doubt.”
Maddison appeared in England’s friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday, coming off the bench in the 3-0 victory at St James’ Park.
With seven senior England caps to his name, Maddison was also part of Southgate’s squad for the 2022 World Cup, although he didn’t get a chance to play in Qatar.
He moved to Tottenham from Leicester City for £40 million last summer but had a mixed season after a good beginning was interrupted by injury.
He also said, “I wish all the best to the boys in Germany. They’re an amazing group, and some of them are my closest friends. I really hope we win.”
England begins their Euro 2024 journey with a match against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on June 16, followed by games against Denmark on June 20 and Slovenia on June 25.
