Leverkusen Beat Roma and Qualified for the Europa League final

Bayer Leverkusen booked their place in the Europa League final in stunning fashion, edging out AS Roma 4-2 on aggregate after a heart-stopping 2-2 draw at home on Thursday. This victory extends their unbeaten run to a record-breaking 49 games!

In the second leg, 2-0 down, Roma displayed unwavering determination. Two penalties from Leandro Paredes, one in each half, brought them level on aggregate despite limited possession. The dream of a comeback flickered brightly for the Italian side.

However, Leverkusen’s relentless spirit would be kept from being wouldn’t quelled. A late own goal, with Roma defender Gianluca Mancini deflecting a corner into the net, pulled them level again. Just when extra time seemed inevitable, Josip Stanisic emerged as the hero, scoring a dramatic counter-attack goal in the seventh minute of pause time. This goal secured victory and shattered Benfica’s long-standing European unbeaten record.

Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso: “We had chances to score goals early and didn’t—but hey, we will in Dublin,” he told RTL. It was a special evening. There were tense moments, but they showed the team’s personality and mentality.

Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka: “We didn’t know ourselves how we were 2-0 behind. “… “To come back against a team like this is unbelievable—our desire is incredible. We’re in the final, we’re on our way to making our dream a reality, and we will do everything to bring the trophy back to Leverkusen.”

This victory sets up a mouthwatering Europa League final clash against Atalanta, who comfortably dispatched Marseille. The Bundesliga champions will be aiming to complete a remarkable treble on May 22nd in Dublin.
