Premier League Could Secure Extra Champions League Spot

Premier League players celebrating a crucial victory.

The Premier League is leading the race to secure an extra spot in next season’s Champions League. UEFA awards two bonus spots for the 2025-26 Champions League to the domestic leagues with the best European performances this season. The points earned by clubs in European competitions contribute to each league’s coefficient ranking, determining which countries will gain the additional spots.

As of January 26, England is at the top of the coefficient table with 100 points and an average of 14.34. Italy follows closely behind with 88 points, and Spain is in third with 82 points. The Premier League’s strong performance has given it a 98% chance of earning the extra spot. If this happens, the team finishing fifth in the league would qualify for the 2025-26 Champions League, with Newcastle currently occupying that position.

The battle for the top five is still wide open, with teams like Arsenal, Fulham, and Nottingham Forest making a push. Nottingham Forest, currently in third place, has a 44% chance of finishing in the top four, and if fifth place secures a Champions League spot, their chances of qualifying would rise to 63%. Meanwhile, Newcastle has a 27% chance of finishing in the top four and a 45% chance of remaining in the top five.

The Europa League winners earn a Champions League spot in addition to league qualification. If a team such as Manchester United or Tottenham were to win the Europa League but not prepare for the Champions League through their domestic league position, they would still prearrange a place in the Champions League for the following season.

Moreover, if the Champions League winners, like Manchester City, were to finish outside the qualification spots in their domestic league, they would still earn a place in the Champions League. This allows the Premier League to have seven teams in next season’s competition, including the top five league finishers, the Champions League winners, and the Europa League champions.
